Chrome's About to Give Gemini a Shortcut to Your Searches

Looks like Google is cooking up a handy new trick for Chrome users who can't get enough of that shiny AI assistant, Gemini. Rumor has it the search giant is working on adding a direct shortcut to summon the chatbot right from your address bar.

That's right, instead of having to navigate to Gemini's website, you'll soon be able to simply type '@gemini' into Chrome's iconic omnibox and boom - the AI sidekick will be at your beck and call. Talk about convenience!

The leaked feature, discovered skulking in a future Chrome Canary test build, points to Google accelerating its push to integrate generative AI across its browser and OS ecosystem. After all, Microsoft is already aggressively shoving its Copilot bot into every nook and cranny of Windows.

While Google has taken a more measured approach so far, moving Gemini front-and-center could signal they're ready to start playing AI assistant leapfrog with the competition. A direct omnibox summon puts that AI horsepower just a few keystrokes away.

Of course, the upgrade is still gestating deep in Google's experimental Canary channel for now. But brave early adopters can actually try it out today by enabling some flags and restarting the test browser build. Fair warning though - this baby's unfinished, so expect some hiccups!
